How to Use the Songbook on a Tablet or Cell Phone

Both the main songbook and the Beatles songbook contain bookmarks (a list where you can choose which song to view). All devices come with an app that will read PDFs but only the Adobe Acrobat Reader app will display the bookmarks. If your device doesn’t have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you will need to install this free app.

Here are the instructions for how to install Adobe Acrobat Reader on your device and how to find the bookmarks:

Instructions for Tablets

  1. If you haven’t already done so, visit the Ukes of London website to download the main songbook and the Beatles songbook to your device: https://ukesoflondon.ca/wp/sheet-music/
  2. Next, go to the Google Play Store on your device.
  3. Search for the app Adobe Acrobat Reader: Edit PDF. Make sure that you are installing this exact app by Adobe and not a comparable app as there are many PDF reader apps available. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free app.
  4. Tap the Install button to install the app.
  5. Once the app has been installed, tap the Open button.
  6. If a Welcome to Acrobat Reader pop-up appears that prompts you to log in to Adobe by using Facebook or Google or by creating a new Adobe account, ignore this and close the pop-up window using the small X in the upper right corner of the pop-up window. You do not need to log in to use the app.
  7. You should now see the heading Locations on the left side of the app window with a series of options for finding the file you want to open below. Tap the correct location where the file for the Ukes of London songbook is stored on your device. Open the songbook file.
  8. The bookmarks icon will now appear on the upper right of the menu bar along the top. Tap the bookmarks icon.
  9. You will now see the Bookmarks dropdown window that contains the list of songs within the songbook. You can select a song by tapping it. Once you’ve selected a song, the Bookmarks dropdown window will disappear. If you want to select a different song, tap the Bookmarks icon again to return to the list.

Instructions for Cell Phones

  7. Tap the Files icon at the bottom of the app window to see a list of locations where files are stored. Tap the correct location where the file for the Ukes of London songbook is stored on your device. Open the songbook file.
  8. The Adobe Acrobat Reader app doesn’t contain the Bookmarks icon within the upper menu bar when it’s installed on a cell phone. You will need to tap the three vertical dots that appear in the upper right corner of the menu bar.
  9. You will now see a list of options for the PDF. There isn’t an option for bookmarks, but you will see an option for Contents. Tap Contents. You will now see the Contents dropdown window that contains the list of songs within the songbook. You can select a song by tapping it.
  10. As the Contents window will take up about half of your screen, you can get rid of it by tapping the Contents title bar and swiping down or by tapping anywhere on the song that appears above the Contents window. To select a different song, tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner of the menu bar to return to the Contents option.
